PhD Programme in Philology, Italian Literature and Linguistics

The PhD Programme in Philology, Italian Literature and Linguistics, built on the previous PhD Programmes in Italian Literature and Philology and in Philologies and Linguistics, is conceived as a centre of advanced training for the acquisition of specialised expertise in the fields of literary, philological and linguistic studies.

The Programme, structured into four curricula, defines its principal areas of study and research:

  • the international curriculum in Italian Studies, focusing on Italian literature from its origins to the present day, is run in partnership with the Sorbonne (Paris IV) and the University of Bonn and leads to the award of a joint degree;
  • the international curriculum in Linguistics, established in partnership with the University of Bonn, is devoted to the study of language in all its dimensions;
  • the curriculum in History, Tradition and Criticism of Texts in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance offers a specifically philological and palaeographical-codicological approach to the study of texts from the early centuries of Italian literature;
  • the curriculum in Digital Humanities focuses on digital methodologies and technologies applied to humanities research, including a diachronic perspective.

The Programme includes two types of lectures and seminars: curriculum-specific (but open to all doctoral students), and aimed to all four curricula.

The Programme’s primary educational objective is the study of the word—first and foremost in its written and literary forms—while also establishing appropriate connections with orality and new forms of communication.
